AutoCAD 1.0, released in December 1982, was the first CAD program to run on a microcomputer with internal graphics. Before that time, most CAD programs ran on mainframe computers or minicomputers, with each CAD operator (user) working at a separate graphics terminal. It could import and export technical data in the PostScript, dBase, and dBase III formats. The first commercially distributed version was 1.01 in January 1983.
AutoCAD 1.0 supported the following features:
• Extrusion and cutting, including boolean operations and transformations;
• Drafting and sketching;
• Features for creating and editing images, including raster, vector and bitmapped graphics;
• Multicam editing; and
• An object browser and pop-up help menu.
Since the first release, AutoCAD has added many new features including:
• A command-line utility called DB2DW for converting AutoCAD DWG files into the DWG format used by older programs such as AutoCAD 2;
• Live link functions;
• The ability to work with data from other applications and spreadsheets;
• A reference manager for managing drawings;
• A two-dimensional (2-D) engineering workbench;
• Reference objects to help manage data;
• The ability to create and edit two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) solid and surface models;
• Features for creating animations;
• Vector filters;
• The ability to convert raster image data into vector data;
• Layer management;

An add-on for AutoCAD in 1987
In 1985, a company named New Dimension Technologies was founded by 3 students from the University of Illinois: Jack N. Adams, Tommy Simons, and Jay T. Atkins. They decided to create an application that could be developed using the AutoLISP scripting language, but would be able to generate a native EXE application instead of using a web browser. They chose the name AutoCAD due to the fact that CAD stands for Computer-Aided Design, and AutoCAD was the first CAD application designed to produce native executables for the MS-DOS operating system.
The team developed their first version of AutoCAD in October 1987, and it was released as an early demo version. The first customers were the Autodesk Research Lab and the University of Illinois Computer Graphics Laboratory.
In September 1988, the University of Illinois awarded the company a contract to develop and market AutoCAD as a commercial product. The company was founded by Tom Simons, Jay Atkins, and Jack Adams. Mike Matthews joined in the fall of 1988 to manage the marketing, product design, and application programming teams. The software was released to the public in May 1989 for $395. A revised version named AutoCAD 2.0 was released in 1990.
First commercial release
The first commercial release was made available in October 1989 for the MS-DOS operating system. It consisted of AutoCAD 2.0 with the ability to create technical drawings and drawings for architectural projects.
In 1991, the company introduced its second version of AutoCAD, named AutoCAD 2.1, with the ability to import and export CAD drawings. It had several features that allowed users to convert the files to other formats such as DWG (2.0 and 2.1), DXF, XDWG, IGES, PDF, and CDR. This version of AutoCAD had a more user-friendly interface and a new waveform tool, which created a surface from the parameters defined in a drawing.
From 1995 to 1997, AutoCAD 2.1 was continuously upgraded to incorporate new features. In 1996, the software was released for the Windows 95 operating system and allowed users to work with 2D or 3D drawings as well as create parametric surfaces and drawings. With the introduction of the 3D Models, the drawings were created on planes and solids.
